What is Net Neutrality?
Is the principle that Internet Service Providers must treat all data on the internet the same, and not discriminate or charge differently by user, content, website, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or method of communication. For instance, under these principles, internet service providers are unable to intentionally block, slow down or charge money for specific websites and online content.
It preserves our right to communicate at liberty online. Net Neutrality means an internet that allows and protects free speech. For example, your phone company should not decide who you call or what you discuss on a call, your ISP shouldn’t restrict the content you read or post online. The internet without Net Neutrality isn’t really the internet.
Why Should you be concerned?
On December 14th, 2017 the FCC approved Chairman Ajit Pai's plan to gut the Net Neutrality protections. This means that the rules that were in place that protected these rights will be dismantled.
What will happen to the internet?
Without Net Neutrality rules, companies like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon will be able to control and determine which websites, content and applications will succeed in our internet world.
These companies can now reduce the speed of their competitors' content or block political opinions they do not agree with. They can charge extra fees to the few content companies that can afford to pay for preferential treatment subjecting all others to a slower tier of service.
Why is Net Neutrality important for businesses?
Net Neutrality is extremely important for small business owners, startups and entrepreneurs, who depend on the open internet to launch their businesses, create markets, advertise their products and services and reach customers.
Small business and entrepreneurs have been able to really grow online thanks to Net Neutrality. Without it, ISP's will abuse their gatekeeper position and destroy the internet's fair and level playing field.
ISP's may also charge companies a toll or fee to make their content available. Big tech companies like Google, Netflix and Spotify wouldn't be happy about the tolls, but they'd most likely pay because they can afford it. Smaller business and startups, would have a harder time.
How does this affect you personally at home?
This change does open the door for ISP's to charge more to some big broadband users like Netflix or Youtube, which could pass those increased costs to their subscribers.
Your home internet ill is likely to get more expensive as well. In other words, you may no longer be able to access every website on the internet with you current monthly fee. For instance if you're a Comcast customer, you may have to pay extra to be able to stream video from Netflix or Amazon, rather than from NBC or Hulu, which Comcast part-owns. If you're a Verizon customer, you may get charged extra to access Google's news or finance sites rather than Yahoo's.
